Law on Energy Efficiency

Law No. 21,305 on Energy Efficiency was published today in the Official Gazette, which seeks to make a rational and efficient use of resources and covers practically all energy consumption in the country, including transportation, industry and mining, residential, public and commercial sectors.

The new law establishes that every five years the Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the respective sectoral ministries, must prepare a National Energy Efficiency Plan, which must include at least the following areas: residential energy efficiency; minimum standards and labeling of appliances; energy efficiency in buildings and transportation; energy efficiency and smart cities; energy efficiency in the productive sectors; and education and training in energy efficiency. In addition, it must establish short, medium and long term goals, as well as the plans, programs and actions necessary to achieve such goals.
