New Law on Determination of the Order of Surnames by Parental Agreement

May 14th 2021

Today’s edition of the Official Gazette published Law No. 21.334, on the Determination of the Order of Surnames by Parental Agreement, which allows the mother and the father to determine, by mutual agreement, the order of transmission of their respective first surnames in the birth registration of the first of their common children, which will be valid for all their common children.

In addition, the new law introduces amendments to Law No. 4,808, on Civil Registry, highlighting, among them, that any person of legal age may, once and in the manner provided by the new law, request before the Civil Registry and Identification Service the change of order of surnames determined in his or her birth registration.
